India's Struggle

In India there are many problems that include child labor, human trafficking, and child exploitation. Human trafficking in India is for things like forced labor and basically child prostitution. Men, women, and children that are in debt are forced to work in places like rice mills, and embroidery factories. No professional studies on this human trafficking in India have been done but some NGO's say that the human trafficking affects tens of MILLIONS of Indians. India only has about 1.21 billion people so a good percentage of the Indian population is affected by human trafficking. In India children under the age of 14 are forced to work in glass blowing industries and carpet-making factories. It is reported that there are about 20-50 million child laberors and it has become acceptable in Northern India. Not only do the kids have to deal with being forced to work for extremely low wages, but they also have to work in unhygienic conditions. Child exploitation is also a growing problem in India. Exploitation means to take advantage of so basically it means people in India are taking advantage of children. This is the basically the same thing as rape in America but it is nowhere near as big of a problem as it is in India. Child exploitation could either mean taking advantage of children by making them do labor, or using them sexually.

China & India

China and India are the only two "population billionaires"

China: 1.35 billion
India: 1.21 billion

40% of the population, live in China or India.

The population in 1950 is about equal to the population of China and India combined

The United States is the third biggest in population with 318 MILLION.

Each of their population is bigger than the whole western hemisphere's population.

The life expectancy for China is 73 years, and India's life expectancy is 64.

International migration is not that big of a deal to them, they don't like it, but they're not worried about it.

In Class 10-27-10

In class today we continued to watch the movie about the Lost Boys and what they are  becoming in America. It began with the Lost Boys that came to America spreading their point on why issues in Sudan should be solved. One of the Lost Boys said the solution to the Sudan issues is in Africa, the people there and the natural leaders that are born there. Panther decides to go back to Africa and meet his future wife and to see his homeland again. We also began talking about a group project that we will be starting tomorrow about news in Sudan and stuff like that.

The civil war in Sudan started in September 1983 when the Sudanese President declared that they are adding Islamic punishments from Islamic Law into the penal code. Southerners and non Muslims were subjected to these punishments.

In class we watched another part of the movie about the Lost Boys. In what we watched today, it showed the people getting into their new jobs, what they have to repay to the government (such as airplane cost and other costs the government lent them with) and during the end of the part we watched, it was Christmas time and they were unsure and had many questions about it.

Lost Boys of Sudan

The  Lost Boys of Sudan had to run away from their home in Sudan because civil war broke out, killing thousands of innocent people in Sudan. Boys were specifically threatened by this civil war and thats why they were called the "Lost BOYS".
The Lost Boys left Sudan and walked to Ethiopia and lived there for a little, but after a while, Ethiopia's government toppled and they basically kicked the Lost Boys out, forcing them to walk to Kenya.
The refugee camps were really hard for the lost boys because they were short on food, water, and other supplies.

In Class 10-21-10

In class today we, learned life lessons such as opening the door for someone, and how to respond to someone saying 'thank you'. We also watched a movie on the "Lost Boys" of Sudan that had to run away from they're home because of civil wars over religion. It explained their 1000+ mile journey on their escape from danger in Sudan and how some of them were chosen to go to America.

In Class 10-20-10

In class all we did was went over our 100 point population quiz and I kept it for later

In Class 10-8-10

  • Right now there are more people on the planet now then there ever has been.
  • 90% of this population growth takes place in the developing countries of Africa, South and East Asia, and Latin America.
  • It took until 1804 to have our population to be 1 billion, that took over 10,000 years.
  • To get the next billion, it was in 1927, that took 123 years.
  • To get our 3rd billion in 1960, it took 33 years.
  • To get our 6th billion in 1999, it took 12 years.
  • This says that over the years, our population grew by the billion faster now, than in the 1800s and the early 1900s.
  • In Japan, woman are expected to live a little over 7 more years than men.
  • In the USA women were expected to live a little over 5 years more than men.
  • In Swaziland women were expected to live just a little under a year more than men.
  • Woman are expected to live longer because men have the more dangerous jobs, and more men are in combat in the military than woman. Also, men go to the doctor less than women.
  • Rate of Natural Increase doesn't count migration.
  • Germany has the opposite of the "Baby Boom" because they have a low of reproduction.
  • Germany is basically begging people to have kids, "Be patriotic and have a baby" according to Mr. Schick.

In Class 10-7-10

In class today we went over "Population Studies" again because some people weren't in class yesterday, and the notes were really important so we did a quick overview of what we went over.
Pull Factor: A positive factor that would make someone want to come to a country.
Examples: Good government, good health care, good weather, political/religious freedom, rights.

Push Factor: A negative factor that would make someone want to leave their country and come to another.
Examples: Bad health care, not a safe environment, bad government, bad weather.

The population pyramid is a graph, one side is males and the other side is females. Its a two sided bar graph the male side bar graphs are right to left and female side bar graphs are left to right and in the middle is ages of people. The population pyramid shows distribution of people of various ages.

Baby Boom: any period marked by a greatly increased birth rate.

Germany has the opposite of baby boom. because they're birth rate is at a low.

Wednesday, October 6, 2010

In Class 10-6-10

In class today we went over our "Population Studies" blog answers and we went over why our answers on birth rate, death rate, rate of natural increase, total fertility rate, and net migration rate are what they are. We said that African countries have the highest birth rate because they don't have the knowledge about safe sex and birth control.  We compared the life expectancy of Japan and the United States and said Japans life expectancy is higher than the United States because Japan is more healthy than us. Japan doesn't eat as much fast food as us, they walk everywhere unlike us who drive down the street to get McDonald's or something.
A country or region needs a total fertility rate of 2.1 for the population to remain the same, if the total fertility rate is under 2.1, the population will decrease, and if the total fertility rate is over 2.1 then the population will increase. Immigration is when a person comes into a region, emigration is when a person leaves a region. When someone immigrates to somewhere else, they also are emigrating.

In Class 10-5-10

In class we went over our 100 point test that we took last week that i got a 82% on. I was given a disgusting dum-dum for a right answer on the test, but then got a better tasting smartie after i answered a second question right. The class average was 74.1%, so I got 8.9% better than the rest of the class. Also Mark told Mr. Schick that he was his first male teacher ever, and Mr. Schick went on to tell us that he got a sex change. He was "kidding".

In Class 9-29-10

I wasn't in class today because we had a game against Calvert Hall. In class we were supposed to take a 100 point test so i guess thats what you all did. So its probably a good idea if i made that up tomorrow. But since i wasn't in class thats all i have to say.

In Class 9-28-10

In class today, we spent a good amount of time getting some peoples final grade in for their 9/11 paper in the grade 'book' for their mid-quarter grades. After we got over all these grades and stuff, we started going over whats going to be on the test on Wednesday because its a 100 point test and that will affect our overall grade really bad. We talked about how America was the only country that has ever dropped a nuclear bomb, but Iran HAS a nuclear bomb. Iran won't be able to drop that bomb on us though because we have so many jets and satellites that go through the air at all times so we are protected from an aircraft from other countries. We also told how Iran and Iraq would try to take Israel off the face of the planet, either politically or literally. Mecca is Islams most holy place in the world. I asked if we would bomb Iran's nuclear plant with a little bomb that would set off Iran's nuke that they are building, and Mr. Schick told me that there are people in the government that are trying to do just that. Al-Quida, the terrorist group formed by Osama Bin Ladin, was the group that attacked us on 9/11. Christianity is the largest religion in the world, with 2.2 to 2.3 billion followers. Islam's holy book is the Qur'an, the Judaism holy book is the Torah, and the Christian holy book is the Holy Bible. Christianity and Judaism's holy place is Jerusalem. Judaism has 14 to 17 million followers. Islam has over 1 billion followers. All three religions (Islam, Judaism, and Christianity) are Abrahamic religions. Iran has a theocracy, this means they live by the law in the Qur'an. By law, Muslims have to prey to Mecca five times a day. I'm pretty sure that was a good enough blog to get a 100% in your class for the year.

After researching Iran we went over all the groups told the class what they learned. Important things that were said by groups were; Egypt is located in between the Mediterranean Sea, Red Sea, and Nile River. There are over 76,000,000 people in Egypt, thats 16th most in the world, but they are not very ethnically diverse. Saudi Arabia's population is 28,686,633 they're #2 in oil production in the world and #1 in the world for oil exports. Video Statistics

In the video we watched in class today i learned that in India there are more honors students than the U.S has kids all together, this influences me becuase India is a third world country and they dont have as much money as us but more kids are getting a better grasp on what theyre learning. Also in the video it said that currently students are preparing for jobs that dont exist yet, this influences me because I'm a student so I'll have to soon prepare for these jobs that arn't yet jobs

six word assignment
